May 2016

Two years ago, Tollywood was swept off by a tsunami (as proudly claimed by the makers in the teaser) called Sampoornesh Babu and Hrudaya Kaleyam. While Sampoo became a Burning Star, the film became a cult classic among spoof films genre, while many others hated it passionately.

After two years, the same team has returned with yet another spoof film titled Kobbari Matta. The film's teaser was released a while ago and it has already become a talking point, but for not so good reasons. First thing first, at 2:37 minutes, it's more of a trailer than a teaser.

And secondly, the entire teaser is an attempt to spoof the iconic Rajinikanth in and as Pedarayudu. The entire teaser has been spread with Sampoo's two minute breathless dialogue about women which is more suffocating and derogatory to women rather than evoking laughter. We will have to wait until the film's release to see if Sampoo manages to create any stir at the box-office.

Producer Prasad V Potluri is laughing of at the reports of his exit from film production. As the Kshanam producer is prepping up to make films on spree, reports of him quitting movies come as shocker to many. However, sources close to the producer have quashed them as "baseless" reports.

"PVP is a strong man. He has great passion for filmmaking and has long list of goals to be achieved. In fact, he is aiming to revolutionise the filmmaking and bringing corporate culture into the production. He has already prepared a road map," said a highly-placed source in the production house.

The source added that he's not so fed-up with the directors but he'd be more conscious from now on wards. While Rana-starrer Ghazi, India's first submarine-based war film, is under production in Hindi, he is contemplating to remake Bangalore Days in Telugu. On other hand, several other projects are under various stages of talks, pre-production. Not long ago, PVP himself stated that he'd be making 9 films in another six months

Looks like the bad times for overseas distributors will continue to haunt them this summer.

After a decent start to their summer season with Oopiri, the US buyers have been pegged down by a couple of high profile disasters such as Sardaar Gabbar Singh and Sarrainodu, which made losses to the tune of more than $1 million each.

And now, Brahmotsavam is giving sleepless nights to the overseas buyers as the film is struggling at the ticket windows. With nearly $2.7 million at stake, Brahmotsavam has so far collected close to $1.5 million, leaving slightly more than half the investment yet to be recovered.

Even though Mahesh's overseas stamina is pulling the crowds in decent numbers, the film has to perform exceedingly well to bail out its buyers. With Trivikram's A..Aa set for June 2 release, Brahmotsavam is staring at a stiff competition.

On the other hand, US buyers are pinning all their hopes on the next summer biggies such as A..Aa and Kabali.

24 Movie Review

24 has caught every film lover's attention with its intriguing promos. Vikram Kumar's previous film Manam has set a bar high for the director and people expected something exceptional from him again. Vikram Kumar's 24 is a science fiction drama about time travel. It is a very complicated plot but Vikram Kumar makes it simple and very understandable, and all the more enjoyable.

What is it about?

Scientist Siva Kumar (Surya) invents a watch that can control the time. His evil twin brother Athreya (Surya) is after the watch. He kills Siva Kumar and his wife (Nitya), but Siva Kumar makes sure his baby boy is in the safe hands. He also leaves the watch along with the baby. The boy grows up to be Mani (Surya) a watch mechanic. Athreya wakes up from coma after twenty six years and tries to restart the project 24. He gives an advertisement to find if someone can make his dream come true. An intrigued Mani goes to Athreya to find the truth behind the watch, but Athreya catches him and kills him and take possession of the watch. What happens next?

Performances:

Surya is just mind blowing in the role of Athreya. His expressions are priceless as he portrays the evilness of the character just by sitting in a wheel chair. Surya is also good as the scientist and as charming as ever as Mani. Samantha is good within the character's limitations. Nitya Menon has a brief role to play. Ajay is good. Saranya is impressive.

Technicalities:

Vikram Kumar has once again come up with an out-of-the-box idea and tried to narrate it in a very simple manner that most of the people could understand. He has masterfully executed the main plot of the movie. This film will put him in the league of great directors that Indian cinema has ever produced.

Rahman's background score is very good. Songs could have been better. There are only a few songs in the film and we expect far better output from the Oscar winner. Cinematography is one of the major highlights of the film. Thirru has done a fabulous job in bringing the imaginary world of the director to life. Editing is fine. Production values and VFX is top notch.

Thumbs Up:

Thumbs Down:

Slow pace

Limited appeal

Analysis:

Despite Vikram Kumar's best efforts to make this an appealing movie to the majority of audience, the concept may not be easily grasped by the frontbenchers. This may impact the film's prospects at the box office. 24 is not a perfect film as it has its share of flaws and problems.

Director failed to strike a balance between the colorful romantic side of the story with its grey side. The film looks entirely different whenever Atreya comes on screen. Vikram Kumar should have toned down the Surya-Samantha track. He could have edited out few bits from that episode as it comes as a major speed bump on a thrilling ride.

Although 24 has limited appeal and has its minuses it is one of the best movies in recent times. We won't get to see such ideas being executed by our filmmakers where the majority of audience loves to watch the masala stuff. Vikram Kumar needs a pat on the back for exploring something unusual and Suriya should be lauded for backing such an innovative idea. 24 is a must watch for audience that are craving something different in an Indian film.

Verdict: Two Thumbs up.

Supreme Movie Review

Anil Ravipudi's Patas was a surprise hit. The young director has delivered a very good entertainer that has given a break for Kalyan Ram who was struggling at that time. Ravipudi has once again banked upon commercial elements in his second film. Supreme is not supreme in any department, but the director made sure to have entertainment throughout the movie.

What is it about?

Balu (Tej) is a cab driver who falls in love with sub inspector Bellam Sridevi (Rashi Khanna). Balu comes across an orphan Anglo Indian kid Rajan (Mikhail) who lives on a footpath. Balu takes the boy along with him. This boy has an untold secret and his life is in danger. Vikram (Kabir) is after the kid and Balu have to save the boy from his men and help the boy achieve his goal.

Performances:

Sai Dharam Tej is a live wire. He is extremely energetic and has good comedy timing. His dances and fights will appeal to the masses. However he has to work on his expressions in emotional scenes. Rashi Khanna played the role of an entertaining cop. She is good within her limitations. She also added zing to the songs with her glamour.

Ravi Kishan too gets an entertaining character. He is competent. Kabir has nothing much to do except for looking stylish all the time. Sai Kumar and Rajendra Prasad did important characters. The real show stealer is the little kid Mikhail who is adorable. Vennela Kishore, Prudhvi, Posani, Srinivas Reddy and Prabhas Srinu did their bit in providing the comic relief.

Technicalities:

Anil Ravipudi's story is as old as hills. Even his screenplay is neither exciting nor thrilling. It moves on a predictable note, but the director is attentive enough to add comedy to the proceedings. The movie could have been a total downer if the director didn't introduce comedy characters at the right intervals. The director's work is not as convincing as his first film though. Second half lacked the zing.

Remix song is good. It is shot well too. Bellam Sridevi too will woo the masses. Sai Karthik's background music is good in parts. Editing is alright. Action episodes are impressive, especially the chase sequence. Cinematography is one of the major attractions. Sai Sriram did a commendable job in presenting the film in a trendy way. The chase sequence has Hollywood vibe to it. Production values are very good.

Thumbs Up:

Comedy

Thumbs Down:

Routine Script

Predictable

Below Average second half

Analysis:

Supreme is an out and out commercial entertainer that banks heavily upon comedy. There is action, romance, sentiment and everything that we expect out of a commercial film. However except for comedy in parts and few action scenes there is nothing that really impresses the viewers.

The plot is too thin and very predictable. Despite the routine scenes, first half of the film is passable with some comedy episodes delivering the laughs. The scenes related to Bellam Sridevi's family have come out well. Also the valet thieves episode clicks at times. Interval is alright with an expected twist.

The real trouble starts in the second half as there isn't any conflict in the story. Everything runs on a predictable note without any twists and turns making it a boring affair. Climax should have been handled better. Fight composed on the handicapped persons is a good commercial thought. All in all Supreme has its moments but lacks the punch that is very much needed for a commercial film. It is an okay watch if you go with little or no expectations. To cut the long story short it is an average offering from the Patas director.

Verdict: Supreme is mildly entertaining.

Raja Cheyyi Veste RATING: 2.5/5
Cast: Nara Rohit, Nandamuri Taraka Ratna, Isha Talwar and Others

Raja Cheyyi Veste Movie Review
Nara Rohit's last film Savitri was released exactly four weeks ago and he is back again. This time he is accompanied by Nandamuri Taraka Ratna, who played a dreaded villain for a change. Raja Cheyyi Veste made some buzz across film circles with interestingly cut trailers. Will this film quench the thirst of Nara Rohit and give him that much needed hit?

What is it about?

Rajaram (Rohit) is a wannabe film director. He gets a message from a top director who asks Rajaram to write a love story for him. Rajaram writes his own love story and sends it to the director, but he says that he has scrapped that project and doing an action entertainer. He asks for a particular scene where the hero kills the villain and Rajaram sends the scene to the director. In return Rajaram gets a courier from the director asking him to execute the same plan and kill Manick (Taraka Ratna). The unknown caller keeps on harassing Rajaram to kill Manick and also attacks his girlfriend Chaitra (Isha Talwar).

Performances:

Nara Rohit is in his elements. He needs to shed down few extra kilos to look better particularly in romantic scenes. He is at home in the emotional scenes. Taraka Ratna's makeup is out of place. Care should have taken on his styling and looks. He is anything but menacing in that villain character. Isha Talwar is beautiful and adds glamour to the proceedings. There are many actors in the supporting characters. Sivaji Raja, Sashank and Srinivas Avasarala made their presence felt.

Technicalities:

Pradeep Chilukuri tried to tell a beaten to death revenge story in a new style. He succeeded up to some extent, but couldn't hold the film together. There are many plot holes that makes this 'intelligent play' look lame and silly. Director succeeded in making a technically slick film within the budget constraints.

A couple of songs are passable. Title song is well shot. Dialogues are good in parts. Editing could have been tighter. Films like these should run at a breakneck pace. Cinematography is good. Stylized cinematography is the major asset to this film. Varahi banner's production values are commendable.

Thumbs Up:

Interval point

Few twists

Dialogues

Thumbs Down:

Beaten to death plot

Lethargic screenplay

Second half lacks steam

Dull Climax

Analysis:

Raja Cheyyi Veste has a very intriguing twist towards the intermission point that sets the right mood for the second half. Even the second half starts on an interesting note with some thrilling scenes right after the interval point. However director loses grip over the narration after a while and the film starts to move at snail's pace.

The flashback episode is the key for this film to keep the audiences interested about the rest of the story. However that episode lacked emotional depth and the predictable ending makes it a boring fare. Director's attempt at intelligent play didn't translate on to the screen because of poor execution.

One would expect a spell binding climax given the buildup to hero's intelligence. What Raja Cheyyi Vesthe offers is a lackluster ending with laughable emotions. This film could have been better if the conflict between the hero and villain is established well. Cat and mouse game should have been the plot device to run this sort of movie. Raja Cheyyi Vesthe ends up as a half baked film with many interesting ideas gone wasted.

Verdict: Raja Disappoints.

Sarrainodu Movie Review

With the season's first biggie Sardaar Gabbar Singh turning out to be an epic disappointment, fans and trade are heavily banking upon Sarrainodu to come to the rescue. Boyapati Srinu's decent track record and ever reliable Allu Arjun combining with Allu Aravind, one of the top producers of Telugu film industry, one would expect a minimum guarantee film. However, Sarainodu suffered a lot due to bad story and screenplay. Allu Arjun did his best to save this film from being a debacle, but even a star cannot help a lackluster script to be a blockbuster.

What is it about?

Gana (Allu Arjun) the son of Chief Secretary falls in love with local MLA (Catherine). When he decides to give up his rebellious attitude to marry her, in comes Maha (Rakul) with a big problem. Now Gana has to lock horns with blood thirsty, powerful criminal Dhanush (Aadi) to save Maha from the trouble. Who is this Maha and how is she linked to Dhanush? Why does she comes running to Gana for help?

Performances:

Allu Arjun: Allu Arjun has never attempted a full blooded massy entertainer in his career so far. Boyapati Srinu is particularly known for making mass masala films with heavy dose of violence and bloodshed. Allu Arjun effortlessly slips into the character. His bulked up body makes us believe that he has the raw power to kick and kill that many bad guys. Allu Arjun added his dose of comedy to the film with his antics and dialog delivery. Allu Arjun fans won't be disappointed with the film as the actor delivers a commendable performance all the way.

Aadi Pinishetty and Others:
Boyapati is known for creating some of the powerful villains Telugu film audience have ever seen. We expect a lot when an actor of Aadi caliber is given the antagonist role. Aadi looks suave and stylish. However he is not as menacing as he should be. His character is not etched properly as it loses steam after a while.

Rakul Preeth is just okay. All she has to do is look admiringly at Allu Arjun whenever he is bashing the bad guys. Catherine is a miscast as the MLA. Brahmanandam's comedy is stale, so is Vidyullekha's. There are a lot of noted actors in the film but none makes an impression including Srikanth.

Technicalities:

Boyapati Srinu banks upon his strengths yet again. He didn't take Allu Arjun's image into consideration. He focused only upon presenting Allu Arjun in a mass avatar. He spent a lot of time on hero elevation shots and scenes. He didn't take much care about the script that goes haywire most of the times. Allu Arjun had to put things back on track whenever Boyapati goes off the mark.

Thaman's background score is powerful. Songs are good and are shot lavishly. Dialogues could have been better. Cinematography is top class. Editing is bad as the film drags on and on. Production values are one of the biggest assets to this film.

Thumbs Up:

Allu Arjun

Hero Elevations

Thumbs Down:

Uninteresting Script

Overdose Of Violence

Predictable Climax

Analysis:
A lot of buildup is given to the villain right from the first scene. We settle in expecting a tug of war between the villain and the hero. However hero is too powerful that any number of rowdies can't even pull out a button from his shirt. At least the director should have given the villain an upper hand for some time.

But nothing can stop the hero from whatever he does and wherever he wants to go. Even the villain looks like a mere puppet after a while. There is little depth in Boyapati's story that it struggles hard to keep going. Boyapati Srinu has included many fight scenes to keep the audiences interested.

All the stunts are choreographed in the same way. There is no variety and it gets hideous after some time. We expect a powerful climax because of the powerful villain, but all we are served is a run of the mill stuff that ends horribly predictable. There are few bright points about the film, but we cannot let this one pass off as a passable fare as there are so many more dark moments. Allu Arjun's spotless performance is the main highlight of this Boyapati's bland and boring mass masala offering.

Verdict: Not 'Saraina' Attempt!

Ever since the project Okka Manasu was launched, there have been immense expectations with the film. Mega daughter, Niharika Konidela makes her debut through this simple love story alongside Naga Shorya which is drawing unnecessary attention now a days.

The audio launch will be graced by Ram Charan and Varun and this will surely help in the promotions of the film but the over hype and hungama has sidelined the young hero Naga Shourya.

Industry insiders say that Okka Manasu is a sweet love story made on a small budget and with unique narration. The presence of these mega heroes and unwanted hype is creating problems for Naga Shourya who is playing the male lead and his name is no where to be seen because of the attention Niharika is getting.

Well, for Niharkia, things are just fine as she is getting all the hype and needed attention for her debut film.

Notwithstanding the mixed reviews, Allu Arjun's Sarainodu has taken the box office by storm. The film clocked in Rs 101 Crore gross (63.6 Crore share world-wide till May 9th) which is said to be highest in Allu Arjun's career and thus stood among the top 5 highest grossers in the Telugu film industry. The film has broken the opening weekend records of his previous films and is one of the third highest opener standing next to Srimanthudu and Baahubali. Let's take a look on the factors that led the film to achieve the record-breaking numbers.

Allu Arjun

Allu Arjun's new avatar as mass hero instantly lapped up by masses. The way Arjun molded himself the role and how effortlessly he slipped into the character of Gana is lapped up critics, audiences alike. His bulked up body made viewers believe that he has the raw power to take on bunch of goons. His antics, dialogue delivery, comedy tinge worked well. Bunny has given a commendable performance all the way. And thus he becomes one of the major factors for pulling the crowds to theatres.

Boyapati

Allu Arjun's attempt to have an image makeover as a mass hero has been well conceived by Boyapati. Best known for mass entertainers with hero-worshiping elements, director Boyapati Sreenu has a track record of showcasing intense scenes that none can match up to. With Sarainodu, Boyapati has landed into the next level. Besides elevating the star, he also shown Bunny in new style. The buildup scenes, hero's introduction scenes, stylish action episodes have all struck the nerve of majority of viewers.

Timing

The timing of the release of Sarainodu has helped the film leaps and bounds. The disappointment of Sardaar Gabbar Singh and audiences' craving for good film helped the film a lot. Allu Aravind's meticulous planning, wide release have added up to the film's content. In addition to this, ongoing Summer holidays too worked in favour of the film's success.

Promotions

Last but not the least, the film's aggressive promotions have helped the film sustain the mixed talk it got in the opening. Though reviews weren't pleasing, audiences gave big thumbs up to the film. The film also received good word-of-the-mouth and film's promotions have helped it to take it forward. Considering wide fan following, Allu Arjun visited Bangalore ahead of film's release and he didn't even give up after the film hit good numbers. From the start to till the recent Blockbuster function, the film's publicity is yet another factor behind Sarainodu's stupendous success.

On the whole, all the above factors made Sarainodu possible to hit landmark Rs 100 Crore gross number.

Have you ever seen A R Rahman in an angry mood. The answer might be a huge no as the Oscar winner is one man who is sober and calm all the time. But things took a u-turn as Rahman got hugely upset and walked away from a Hindi project.

Reports coming in from Mumbai reveal that A R Rahman was working on Aamir Khan's upcoming project Secret Super Star from one year now. He had even composed some songs for the film but sadly, the project never took off.

He reportedly contacted Aamir and his team who ignored him as they were busy with Aamir's next film Dangal. Left now with no choice, Rahman called the concerned authorities and left the film mid way.

A different music director has now been roped in for the film which will be made by Aamir Khan's personal manager.

Gang Leader was a trendsetter and a special movie in Chiranjeevi's career, that pushed him to thenext level of stardom. Few movies have that luck of having best in all departments and Gang Leader was sure one of them. As the movie completed 25 years of release, fans have been celebrating and so are Chiru and Charan.

Ram Charan came up with dubsmash video of Chiru's famous dialogue in Gang leader and recalled his childhood memories of dancing for its superhit numbers. Chiru too lost in memories from the time of Gang Leader, but came out expressing his wish to see Ram Charan in that commercial blockbuster remake. Not just Chiru, but Sai Dharam Tej too opined that only Ram Charan has that right to be in Gang Leader remake.

Well, keeping the rights and possibilities aside, Chiru's idea of making a reboot version of yesteryear's superhit movie is not liked by many movie lovers. Be it a classic or commercial potboiler, some movies remain great only if they were kept untouched with remake intentions.

When Chiru's superhit songs from best time of his career are brought to present movies of Ram Charan and Sai Dharam, the new musicians failed to recreate that essence and disappointed fans to core. And when Chiru is expecting Ram Charan to reprise his role in Gang leader movie itself, it becomes the biggest blunder and it stays as bad as their attempt and experience in burning hands with remake of Zanjeer. So, Chiru might be expecting his son to become a 'Gang Leader', but it is Charan who must forget Chiru's wish and leave the movie as it is, evergreen!
